Iran deploys Automatic Train Control system’s friends at International Railway Journal report that Iranian Islamic Republic Railways (RAI) has completed installation of an Automatic Train Control (ATC) system between Tehran and Mashhad.

IRJ says fibre-optic telecommunications and balises on most of the 926km line, with audio frequency track circuits for train detection at stations and other key locations.

RAI has an ongoing programme of safety improvements, and expects to complete ATC installation at 461 stations next year. It has fitted 80 locomotives and 10 Diesel Multiple Units with ATC onboard equipment.

SEPTA chooses onboard PTC supplier

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has selected Invensys Rail (sponsor of to supply onboard Positive Train Control equipment to all of its transit rail vehicles.

The deal will see the existing cab signalling system replaced with Invensys Rail subsidiary PHW’s ACSES onboard computer and nine-aspect Automatic Train Control Equipment.

The onboard PTC equipment will communicate with trackside locations via track circuits, track mounted transponders and an onboard 220MHz radio system. A new aspect display unit will show PTC and cab signalling information to train drivers.
